The paper defines the concept of "market," its classification and main types, examines the construction and space-planning characteristics of such facilities, and also analyzes the inherent fire hazard. An analysis of the existing regulatory framework, including mandatory fire safety requirements for markets, was also carried out. The results of the analysis of the situation with fires and their consequences from fires in the markets registered in Russia in 2021-2024 are presented. The results of raid inspections of markets with trading areas of year-round trade over 10 thousand m2 carried out by the state fire supervision authorities in 2024 were considered. Based on statistical data, the risks of fire consequences at these facilities were calculated. Key factors affecting fire extinguishing in buildings and structures of market facilities have been identified. The main results of the operational activities of fire departments in extinguishing fires in the markets in the period 2021-2024 were analyzed. The conclusion of the work formulated recommendations for improving the fire safety system in the markets, as well as proposals for updating the regulatory framework governing fire safety requirements for such facilities
